Yes, it does feel unfair to label it discrimination if they literally cannot fund the special needs services (which are VERY expensive). I think schools that qualify for the “choice scholarship” should also get government funding for those specific services that would keep them up to par with the public schools. Of course, that gets very complicated.

I attended some privates schools growing up, because our local schools were…well, scary. When my mom heard there was gang activity in the 3rd grade she was out, and even though it was difficult (my parents weren’t rich) we managed to pay for private school. And the private schools we went to, they struggled. It feels unfair to label it discrimination when they just can’t afford to meet special needs. And honestly that so many private schools manage to survive without the garunteed funding public schools have is amazing. I think a lot would like to be able to serve kids with disabilities better, but they just can’t.

But on the other hand, while I support school choice where possible, I think it needs to be done with a very careful hand to make sure that the public options that are already available to EVERYONE, especially those that serve Special needs, aren’t harmed in the process.
