LISTEN…the special ed teacher told me if I wanted to I could follow the bus and meet him at school the first week. I AM DOING IT.

I can sense the knot in stomach, choke in throat feeling that is going to be felt as he drives away in that school bus for the first time. All mothers must go through this incredibly unique feeling… I can really only imagine it. Did I ever tell you how, on my oldest brothers’ first day of kindergarten where he took the bus on his own for the first time, my Dad actually got in the car, followed the bus to school, and waited in the parking lot to make sure he got into school okay?? lol

I remember my daughter Grace wanting to ride the bus to preschool, for 2 years I said no (overprotective much?). But that third year I gave in and the thrived on the independence. And LOVED the bus. You have done what every good parent does – lay the best foundation possible, then let them fly (at least a little bit). It’s tough to watch them struggle on their own, but it’s what we must do. You will never stop being an advocate for your son (or your twins), but to allow him to advocate for himself is to give him freedom and confidence.
